In "Sackcloth and Ashes", the lap steel wails out the anguish of a friend's grief from the death of a beloved wife, while both "Girl on the Beach" and "Ball and Chain"' use subtle finger-picking to evoke the bittersweet ache and nostalgia of a parent watching a child fly out of the nest or the regret with acceptance that comes from maturity . "Telephone" is a more light-hearted tongue-in-cheek rebuke at his wife, who travelled often for work and was rubbish at keeping in touch.
