From the recording Grace
Down Hard digs into the tough reality of homelessness and the crushing loneliness that tags along with it. People offer up their thoughts and prayers, but action? Not so much. Instead, there are lectures and assumptions of laziness. I've spent time working with homeless shelters, hearing stories from folks just desperate for a leg up. "I don't need a witness that I ain't seen no kindness yet" comes straight from seeing how we often miss the mark on showing compassion to those in need. And "when a man falls hard, he falls alone" hits home hard. Through this song, I'm hoping to shine a light on the struggles of the homeless and spark some real empathy and action, rather than just empty words.
Lyrics
Down Hard
Well, I had me a job on city pay
Boss man said go get your tools
I ainʼt got no work for you
When a man falls hard
He falls alone
Stood in line to try and find a job
The man said son you gotta know
Folks don’t let good things go
When a man falls hard
He falls alone
I’ve got these kids I gotta feed
And the world surely ain’t full of shame
They’ll call you lazy
While they look you in the eye
Spare me all your thoughts and prayers
I asked a stranger can he spare a dime
Well, I don’t need a witness that
I sure ainʼt seen no kindness yet
When a man falls hard
He falls alone
Well, I don’t need a witness that
I sure ainʼt seen no kindness yet
When a man falls hard
He falls alone
