"Hard Was the Ground, Cold Was the Clay" is a song deeply influenced by Blind Willie Johnson’s "Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground." When I was learning guitar, Johnson’s music had a huge impact on me, and that song stuck with me because of how haunting it is.
In this track, I brought together three key elements: a dissonant melody that never quite decides if it’s in a minor or major key, a background vocal part that’s more of a moan than a song and clapping. These elements combine to create a sound that echoes the feel of those old Lomax Prison chain-gang recordings, like "Go Down Old Hannah" and "The Levee Camp Moan."
The aim was to capture that raw, visceral energy, and the unease that comes with it—something that feels timeless and unsettling, much like the music that inspired it.
