From the recording Ballad Hunter
"She’s My Home" is a song that was originally written about leaving Alaska and moving to the UK for an earlier version of my band. The song’s theme is one that’s close to me, as someone who moves around a lot—home isn’t tied to a city or a specific place; it’s wherever your family is.
This track started out on Louise as a simple Delta blues style song that sticks to a classic 12-bar blues format, but it appears on my first CD, Glenn Highway Blues, as a full electric blues song. This version is back to its more rustic origins, which makes sense given its roots.
The lyrics reflect the idea of leaving friends behind, but never really being alone, because as long as she’s with me, I’m home. It’s a sentiment that resonates with anyone who’s ever had to pick up and move, knowing that the most important thing isn’t what you leave behind, but who you take with you.
Lyrics
Well now she’s leaving
I’m leaving too
I just don’t know
Where I’m going too
But when she goes
She ain’t going alone
That girl’s my home
Say goodbye
To all my friends
And pray I’ll be
back this way again
But when she goes
She ain’t going alone
That girl’s my home
My bags are packed
Standing by the road
It’s finally
Finally time to go
But when she goes
She ain’t going alone
That girl’s my home
